OLD USER GUIDE (updated 1/31/05)
There are two new User Guides, one for folks who only want to look at the data (User Guide II), another for those who have registered and want to input data (User Guide I). If you want to access User Guide I, click HERE, for User Guide II, click HERE

User Guide I is started, but still under construction.

Month Abbreviations JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEP OCT NOV DEC

Adding Pictures (added 10/9/04) I highly suggest using a photo editor to crop and compress your pictures before adding to the database. Just as an example, I was able to reduce the size of a photo using Adobe Photo Editor from the original size of over 600K to less than 50K without sacrificing view quality (on the web). Smaller files make it easier for others to see the pictures you've added.

Below is a step by step guide to adding a picture for a person. The steps are the same for adding a headstone picture, just start out at Headstones - Add, instead. (added 6/10/04) If adding a headstone photo, first make sure the cemetery that the headstone is located in is already in the database. Check this by using Cemetery, View. If not, it will be easier if you add the cemetery before uploading the photo. Please try and keep pictures at 400x400 pixels, but don't fret if it needs to be bigger to be legible. I've got plenty of larger pictures in here myself.

First thing to do is make sure that the person whose picture you want to add is in the data. If you're putting them in new, do that first. Then come back to this.

Now assuming they're in there:

On the main page, Under photos, click "Add"

You'll get prompted for login, etc.

Then you'll go to Photos page

In that first section, Add New Photo, click the button/box that says "Continue"

You'll then go to Add New Photo page with the first line reading "Image file to upload*."

Click the "Browse" button at the right end of the box and then navigate to the file on your computer and highlight it, (it will show up in the box) then click "Open"

That will take you back to the Add New Photo screen with your file name and location now showing in the add image box

Here's an important step. Those little white circles with the black dot are called radio buttons. The one labeled "Specify Image" is "on" as default. You want it to be the other one. Click the radio button for "Create from original" and the dot will change to it and it will fill in your filename from the above step with the prefix "thumb" into the box automatically.

Scroll on down and add any of the info in the notes, date taken, etc boxes that you want (or not)

Click on the "Always viewable" box (a check mark will appear)

Now the next steps will link your photo with a person in the database

Click the "Find Person" button on the right side of the line right below "Link to this individual"

That will bring up a search box. This search is a little flaky. To find a person you have to either have the name exactly or just do what I do and get close. Here's an example. My grandfather is Urban Fisher. He is in the data as Urban Anthony Fisher.

If I type Urban Fisher, it doesn't find him. If I just type "U" in the First Name Box and Fisher in the Last Name Box, it will come up with all of the Fishers with a "u" in their first name, including him. Then you just select the person by clicking on their name

That will close the search window and populate the box with their database ID automatically. That will show up as an number letter comibination, like I000153

A neat feature. There is a box name "Make Default". If you check that box, the program will use the thumbnail version of you photo anytime you look at the data for a particular person. On their individual page on their pedigree pages, etc. To see an example, look at my son, Bradley Lowell Fisher.

Now just click "Finish" at the bottom. You can go back and look at the record for your person and their picture should now appear.

10/9/04 I've been personally adding a ton of info. to the data. For the most part it works like all of the other genealogy programs, but not quite. One quirk that I've found that I'll bring up to make your life easy. If you know you're going to add a bunch of folks, check first to see if the "source" you want to use as reference is already entered. Census records, books, etc. Go to Sources, View on the main page. If they're not there, it'll be much easier if you add them first before you start adding your new people.
