To add a new photo, on the "Home" page, select "Photos, Add"
IMPORTANT NOTE. Do not proceed with adding any photos unless the person/family
that the picture is of are already entered into the database |
| |

Before adding a new photo, first decide how many people or familes
you want this photo to be
associated with. Typically if its a picture of one person, you would select 1. However maybe
this is a photo of your grandfather and you want this photo to appear whenever someone
looks at your grandmother as well. This is all under your control. You can choose as many
or as few as you wish. You can also choose to associate it with entire families, instead of
individuals. In the example above, you might choose to associate it with your grandparents
as a family instead of individually. The photo would
then show up, not only when someone
looks at your grandparents, but anytime they look at any of their children as well. Correction,
the photo will only show up when you look at the entire family. If you want it to show up when
someone looks at a particular individual, you must also "add" the photo to them as well. |
If you have not yet logged in you will be asked to do so. After logging in (or if you
were already logged in) you will see this screen.
This screen is the starting point for either adding a new photo or editing a photo which you have already subimtted
into the database.
Right now, we're only going to talk about Adding.
For more information about the Number of people, familes, etc. to choose, see the text below the image.
After choosing a number, select "Continue" |
| |
 |
Everything pertaining to adding your photo, except an advanced function for editing
the photo itself, is now performed from this page. We'll walk through each step in adding a new picture. When you
click on the various "buttons" on this page, new windows will open up automatically in your browser to
perform a specific function. After completing that particular function, the window will close and you will continue
working from this page. There are really only 5 steps required to add a picture. There are some optional steps
you may take (which I will cover), but only five to simply get it added. I've marked generally where these steps
are in red.
Scroll down now and we'll look at those 5 steps in more detail. I'll add the optional steps in there as well, but
let you know which ones those are. You can always scroll back up to here to see this entire page. |
|
Step 1.
|
 |
Step 1.
In this step you are simply going to identify to the database where on your computer the photo file is located
and what the name of the file is. Later, the database will use that information in order to transfer (or upload)
a copy of that photo file to the database. But for now we're only concerned with this step.
Don't worry about actually typing any information here. Simply click on the "Browse" button |
|
Step 1. (cont.)
|
 |
Step 1. (cont.)
After clicking on the browse button, a new "Choose File" window will open. If you're like me, you keep
files seperated in different folders. Go to the folder where your picture you want to find is located and double
click on it (the folder). The folder I chose is called PerryCoDatabase |
|
Step 1. (cont.)
|

One suggestion on pictures. Most computer screens are set to 800 pixels
wide. If your photo is larger than that it will not display very well. I try to keep my photos no larger than 700
pixels. If yours are larger than that you might want to consider editing them. Not required, remember, this is
just a suggestion. |
Step 1. (cont.)
After you get to the right folder, you can then choose the specific photo file you want. In this case, I've picked
a photo of my son, Brad, called bradxmas2005. Select the photo by simply placing your mouse cursor on the file
name and do a single left button click. The filename will become highligted as you see here. Then go down to the
bottom right corner and click on the "Open" button. |
|
Step 1. (cont.)
|
 |
Step 1. (cont.)
After you hit "Open", the window will close and the file information will be automatically transferred
to the two fields as shown here.
You are done with Step 1.
Not so hard, huh ? |
|
Step 2.
|

This step, as its says, is creating whats called a thumbnail of your
original picture. All that means is that it is making a new, smaller version of your original picture. This "thumbnail"
will be the picture that is displayed in various places within the database. To see the full size picture you simply
have to double click on the thumbnail. |
Step 2.
This step is easy.
We'll be working with this section. I highly recommend simply picking the "Create from original" radio
button. Do this by positioning your mouse cursor ove the circle and click. The lf you do so, you're done with step
2.
Your window will change to this. Your photo file will be displayed with the addition of "thumb" to the
file name. For an explantion of what we're doing in this step, look to the left below the picture. |
|
Step 3.
|

The "Always viewable" parameter will allow anyone, anytime,
to see this particular picture. This is important because the database is set up to not display information about
living individuals (if you choose to do so). If this photo is associated with a living person and you choose this
parameter, the photo and associated information (Description, Notes, etc.) will always display, even if no other
information about them (Name, Birth Date, etc.) is viewable. |
Step 3.
Actually, everything in this step is optional, but I recommend at least adding a Description of your picture. Please
ignore the last two check boxes, "This image is a document" and "This image comes from an external
source" . We're not really using those in the database.
As you can see, I've added a descripton and some additional information as well. I chose not to add notes.
One important point. Note that I have checked the "Always viewable" box. This is an important feature.
Bottom line, if you check that box, anyone will be able to see this photo at any time. For additional information
on this, see text below the image.
This is it for step three. |
|
Step 4.
|
 |
Step 4.
In this step, we're going to tell the database who this is a picture of. Remember, you had the choice of associating
this photo with one or multiple people (or families). If you chose two or more, this "Link to:" section
will appear as many times as you chose. In this case, I will be linking this photo to one person. The process to
link it to one family (or to multiple persons or families) is the same. |
|
Step 4. (cont.)
|
 |
Step 4. (cont.)
To find the person to associate this photo to, click on "Find Person" (or "Find Family") |
|
Step 4. (cont.)
|
 |
Step 4. (cont.)
After you click "Find Person", a new "Find Person ID" window will automatically open. |
|
Step 4. (cont.)
|
 |
Step 4. (cont.)
You'll need to enter at least something here. Typically, the Last Name is enough, but if there are a lot of people
with that name in the database, you may want to add the first name as well.
Click on Search after you add the Name(s) |
|
Step 4. (cont.)
|
 |
Step 4. (cont.)
After clicking "Search", a new window open displaying those names which met your search criteria. Use
the scroll bar (if necessary) to find the correct person. After you find them, simply click on their name or the
number to the left of their name. |
|
Step 4. (cont.)
|

The "Make Default" Box is very important, but a little hard
to explain. First off, I personally would only consider using this if the picture is of a single person. If the
picture is of a family or place, it really does not apply. If you select "Make Default", this will cause
this particular picture (actually the thumbnail of this picture) to be displayed whenever this person is viewed
in particular places within the database. It might be best to show you what this means by example. Click here. As you can see, my thumbnail picture
is displayed at the top of the page and next to my name in this pedigree chart. The photos or my mother, great
grandparents, etc. were also set up this way. |
Step 4. (cont.)
After you click on the name or number, the window will close and the number (ID) will be automatically entered
in the ID field.
As you can see, I also clicked on the "Make Default" box. For an explanation of the "Make Default"
box, see the text below the image.
You're almost done. |
|
Step 5.
|
 |
Step 5.
This is it. If you do not have any other pictures to add, simply click on "Save" If you want to continue
adding more pictures, click on the "Return to this page" radio button first (the green dot will appear)
then click on "Save"
Congratulations. You just added a picture |
