2839 COLUMBUS - Sister Mary Jordan Smock died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at Mount Carmel East Hospital.

She was born March 20, 1931, in Somerset, to Joseph and Grace Snider Smock. She entered the Novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of St. Mary of the Springs in Columbus in 1952 and made her Profession of Vows in 1954. Sr. Mary Jordan received her bachelor of science degree from St. Mary of the Springs College (now Ohio Dominican University) and a master in science degree in education from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa. In the Columbus Diocese, she ministered at St. Mary Grade School, Lancaster (1954-56); St. James the Less School (1959-60, 1966-75); and Christ the King School (1960-61, 1975-77). Sister also served as a remedial reading teacher at Christ the King (1977-81) and in parish ministry at St. James the Less (1981-95). Sister taught at St. Lawrence O'Toole School in Pittsburgh (1956-59) and at St. Clare of Montefalco School in Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. (1961-66). Sister Mary Jordan served in the ministry to the Sick Program at St. James the Parish from 1995 to 1997, before coming to Mohun Health Care Center. She loved working with the elderly in her parish ministry because she was able to hear their life stories and share her life story with them. She always hoped to share her wisdom with others so that others would have a true appreciation for religion and for God who is the root of everything we do. Her passion in life had been her faith.

Surviving are her sister, Virginia Lee Clouse; many nieces and nephews; and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

Sister was preceded in death by her parents and a brother James Smock.

Calling hours will be from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in the Motherhouse. A Vigil Service of Remembrance will take place from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. that day with wake continuing until 6:30 pm.

2847 Born in Snider Valley located at the headwaters of Buckeye Creek in Clayton Township, Perry County, Ohio. Alfred Snider

2848 The following is taken from the book, Nicholas Snider and Related Lines; page 14.

Not much is known about Catherine, other than that she was a spinster. She appears in the U.S. Census in 1850 with her parents, Nicholas & Elizabeth ... age given is 43. In the 1860 cenus, her age is stated as 50y, & she is living with her brother Conrad & his family. Also, in the 1870 census she is stilling with her brother but her age is now 65. We give her estimated birth date as about 1805/07. It is interesting to note that she says she was born in Maryland ... when in fact Nicholas was living in Mt. Pleasant township, Adams Co., Pa., until 1814. She is mentioned in her father's will. There is a small stone near Conrad's in Maplewood Cemetery in New Lexington that has the last digit worn away. It says: Catherine Snider 187_. This probably her stone."
