ABOUT THE DATABASE & THE PROJECT
1/27/2005

I started working on my family genealogy (on my own) in the mid 1970's. My interest was inherited from my grandmother, whom many of you who live in Perry Co. may have known, Eva M. Bradley. She was County Treasurer for over 30 years. She collected a large amount of information about the county and its people and was quite proud of her own ancestors all of whom had been in Perry Co. for several generations. I have been fortunate enough to have identified all of my ancestors back to my third great grandparents, (to the turn of the 18th century) quite a number back to the sixth great and even one to the 10th great (born in Germany in the late 1500's). All but a couple of those 3rd great grandparents lived a portion of their lives in Perry Co. Given three factors, ancestors in the county early, many many children and that they lived in different parts of the county means that I am somehow related to quite a number of the present inhabitants of the county, even though I have not lived there myself for 40 years.

For those reasons and many more, I have always been interested in the history of the County. I began building various websites in the mid 1990's including many Perry Co. related genealogy sites. You can visit
http://www.perrycountyohio.us to find links to all of those sites and more. I had attempted several times to put the personal family information I had collected on the web with limited success. About two years ago, I discovered this TNG Software product and decided this is what I had always been trying to do. Build a site with all of my information, but allow others to include theirs as well so that we might discover how we are connected.

I have tried to make this website as easy as possible to use while maintaining some control of it. Neither is easy, nor pleasing to everyone. While the software has capabilities on par or above with most of the genealogy programs available for purchase and use on your home computer, I have purposely limited this database to only a fraction of its potential. One of the biggest features that I've not allowed is the ability to upload or download data to the site. If you're using this site, you many already have guessed the reason for limiting downloads. If you haven't guessed, quite simply it is to keep a commercial venture from selling the hard work that I and the other users of the site have done. The data here is freely available to anyone who wants to use it, but it is not for sale. The reason to restrict uploads is a little more difficult to explain. It boils down to this. I have tried personally on several occasions to merge databases. It has always been a miserable failure. Since this database now contains over 12,000 entries
(update 11/19/08 there are nearly 25,000 now), anyone uploading new Perry Co. information is bound to have at least some duplicate data. Getting those duplicates out of the information is nearly impossible, so I've just not allowed it. I hope you understand. I ask that as you add data, please make sure the persons you are entering are not there already first. You are welcome to add more information about anyone, but please don't add them twice.

I have also limited users only the ability to add and modify records. No deletions. Call me paranoid, but again, I don't want the hard work to be ruined. There has been at least one instance of a person requesting an id that was up to no good. The email address traced back to a know hacker server in Bulgaria. I would hate to think what a person with bad intent could do in a very short time. If something really needs to be deleted, write me an
email and I'll get to it when I can. I would also ask that you give great thought before modifying an existing record as well. You have that ability, but please don't change something you're not sure of. I've also not let anyone view names for living individuals. Not sure if thats the right thing to do or not, but folks are really touchy about that so I'm going to err on the side of discretion. If you find a living person displayed, let me know about it and I'll correct it.

Update 3/8/2007. A few months back I made the decision to allow all registered users to view living individuals. I did not do this on a whim. I found it impossible to insist that users not create duplicate records if they couldn't see what was already there. They now can. The ability to "see" living individuals is still not possible to the general public. Only registered users have that capability. And on that note, please know that I make every attempt to verify a user is really who they say they are before allowing them access to the data. If I can't verify that a potential user is truly interested interested, I do not authorize their id's.

I will be the first to say that this database does not function quite as easily as some of the personal programs. The fact that it is web based and a multi user system is why. However that is also why its great for this project. There is a rudimentary user guide available and I am currently working on a much more sophisticated version (I have that newer version for "viewers only" completed) Go
here to see either

I've rambled on enough. One closing item. I DO NOT collect or sell any information from the site. As I mentioned above, that is not what this is about. If you're worried about me selling your email to a spammer, you can rest assured that is not going to happen. I would also like to say that both I and the developer of TNG are very open to suggestions. If you have an idea how this project or software can be improved, don't hesitate to let me know. I will forward all software suggestions on. Just so you know, he makes updates on a monthly basis. If you decide to register, I will automatically include you in any emails about changes to the database. Please, if you get stuck, log out or back out and start over. If you really get stuck, write me a note and I'll try and help.

I hope you enjoy the information and that it helps you discover your ancestors.
